This talk addresses an analytical method for determination of residual stresses in plates and pipes with butt welds. Basing on the model of elastic‐plastic material in the vicinity of welded joints, the welds are modeled by the locally distributed fields of residual (incompatible) strains. The method is based on direct integration of the equilibrium and compatibility equations, which are reduced to a set of governing equations for the key functions with relevant boundary and integral conditions. The governing equations can then be solved by making use of an appropriate analytical method implementing the separation of variables. Application of the method is illustrated with an analysis of the welding residual stresses in a butt‐welded thickwalled pipe and a thin rectangular plate.
Professor Yuriy Tokovyy is currently the head of the department of solid mechanics at National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He obtained his PhD (Mechanics of Solids) at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2003. In 2013, he received his Doctor‐of‐Sciences (Mechanics of Solids) degree from the Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine. The main research interests: direct and inverse problems of thermomechanics of nonhomogeneous and thermo‐sensitive solids, analytical and semianalytical methods of mathematical physics. He published over 220 scientific papers, a number of critical reviews and encyclopedia essays. He is a Board member of several scientific journals (Journal of Thermal Stresses, Bulletin of the Donetsk University A, Mathematical Methods and Physico‐Mechanical Fields). In 2012 – 2013, he was engaged as a section editor of the “Encyclopedia of Thermal Stresses” (Springer, 2014).
